shoe care

General Guidelines

  • Always allow your shoes to dry naturally if the have become wet and never put them on or near any source of direct heat. If leather is dried too quickly it can burn or become brittle which will greatly accelerate its wear.
  • Always use a shoe horn when putting on the shoes to maintain the back shape.
  • On the first few occasions wear your shoes in dry conditions as new leather soles can become slippery on wet surfaces. new shoes should initially be worn for no more than two or three hours at a time. Only when the shoes and the feet have become accustomed to each other should they be worn for a whole day.
  • Try to wear your shoes in dry conditions for the first few occasions. Avoid getting your shoes extremely wet, should this occur allow your shoes to dry naturally on shoe trees and lay the shoes on their sides rather than on their soles. Never use direct heat.
  • we advise that you should not wear your shoes on successive days as the fine leathers used in their manufacture need 24 hours to dry out from natural perspiration.
  • We recommend that your shoes should be wiped clean before applying a good quality shoe cream or kiwi wax polish with a suitable brush or cloth. Once this has been allowed to dry, remove excess polish with a soft brush before buffing to a rich patina.
  • Repair your shoes in good time by using a reputable repairer. we at logues use  Edmonds for all our repairs.
  • Barker are proud to offer a full refurbishment service for most of its shoes, which can be stripped and re constructed on the original last by the craftsmen who originally made them.
  • We advise you to keep the shoe boxes & use them to store your shoes in as this will keep your shoes protected & looking better for longer.

 Cleaning & Maintaining Shoes

  • As leather is not a waterproof material we recommend and before you wear your new leather/ suede/ nubuck shoes that you treat them with a  protective spray.
  • The  suede can be restored by using a suede brush.
  • If your shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper while they dry to keep their shape and do not put near a source of heat.
  • Use a good quality Kiwi polish or cream. Apply evenly to shoe with a brush or soft cloth. Allow it to dry in.  Once the shoe is dry, buff using a natural bristle brush.
  • Let your leather boots dry naturally, stuff them with paper inside the boots if the insides are wet and do not put near a source of heat .If leather is dried too quickly it can burn or become brittle which will greatly accelerate its wear.
